Öppen Föreläsning
Matthew Rana is an artist and writer living and working in Gothenburg, Sweden where he teaches at Valand School of Fine Arts. Often collaborative, his work deals with issues surrounding the politics of the speech-act, with specific focus on the intersections between contemporary art, comedy and poetry.
For his lecture at Valand Artistic Research Centre, v.arc, Matthew will discuss his current research on ekphrasis and read selections from Marbling, a work-in-progress having to do with bodies, books and other trivialities.
A series of Monday lectures are organized through v.arc connected to the research strategy and residency programme. The lecture series contains a mix of practice-led and theoretical lectures. The theoretical lectures are connected to The Valand Seminar for Advanced Art Theory: New focuses on artistic practice and critical writing within contemporary art and research and are curated by Fredrik Svensk. Currently these have focused on one of our research themes; that of the non-anthropocentric.
Each resident gives a lecture for the Valand student body in which they present their artistic practice and contextualize their work. In addition, the researchers discuss the artistic research embedded in the artwork/practice and the research methodologies applied.
The Monday Lecture Series is an important element of the curriculum at the Valand School of Fine Art and serves as a platform for engagement with the students. This event is also open and advertised to the public. The lectures take place on Mondays at 16:00 in the v.arc Common Area. Each lecture is recorded and uploaded to the v.arc website.
Upcoming Research Mondays Schedule, spring 2012:
Mon 21 May: Vasanthi Mariadass (at the Glass House)
Föreläsare: As an artist and writer, my work seeks out the playful and subversive energies of language. My projects are often collaborative and research-based and respond to a context in which language and communication become use-values. In looking at the potential of textual practices and speech acts within consumption society, I have become interested in language's opacity, its slippages and negative capabilities. If we are sold our slavery, then poetry is the gift of an uncertain future (and laughter, the only honest art). Using a variety of means, from books to performance-readings and sculptural installations, my projects look to grasp this future in all its ambivalence.
